Are you self-employed, or do you get a W-2? In either case it would be a legitimate job expense, but how to deduct it would be different.
If you are self employed, it’s an expense on your schedule C.
If you are an employee, getting a W-2, it’s trickier. You can only deduct it if you itemize, not if you take the standard deduction. And even then, you can only take the amount of your unreimbursed employee business expenses that’s over 2% of your adjusted gross income. So if you are an employee, you might or might not actually be able to deduct it.
As long as you use a schedule C when you do your taxes, which is the self employed form, yes you can. There are many things you can deduct if your a self employed carpenter.
