Can you be charged sales tax on shipping charges in the US?
I have a lifetime warrantied product. To have it replaced I have to send the old in and pay shipping charges on the new. I have been charged sales tax on the shipping charge and there has been no sale. I live on Georgia.
Many states levy sales tax on shipping charges though not all do. If shippers are charging you sales tax, you can take it to the bank that it’s required.
There WAS a sale; you paid for a service and many states DO levy sales taxes on services.
The taxation of shipping charges varies from State to State. Some tax it, some don’t.
Is there any possibility that you can access the State of Georgia’s Department of Revenue and obtain this information direct from the source.
Barring that, could you contact your state senator or state representative and obtain this information from them?
It would be legal in my state.
You paid money, so the state wants some of it.
The state I’m in says that shipping is taxable unless it’s for exact postage only.
