How can I get an accounting job with 2+ years in business, a 4 yr accounting degree, but no acct experience?
I have worked for a Fortune 500 company for the past 2.5 years, but not in the accounting department. I am ready for a change and want to move to public accounting. Any suggestions on where or how to find an open accounting job? Looking for Ryan M to answer now that I have updated to let him know I have a 4 year degree.
Network, network, network! And get a referral for reputable agency(ies) that works in the skill set/s you want to develop. Additionally, you should use the career center at the school where you got your degree. You are the product of their program, and they (should) have a vested interested in your success.
everyone has got to start somewhere, i work at a bank as a senior teller and had only been a cashier a winn-dixie before . Someone will give you a chance if you ask for it.
My experience with public accounting firms wont even look at you unless you’re a CPA candidate. The state where I live in requires a MAcc to be a Licensed CPA. Most only require 150 credit hours with X amount of hours in accounting classes. The reason I’ve noticed why they don’t hire Bachelors degree candidates is because the Head or acting CPA has to sign off on the documents as being correct and assume all liability. another reason is because they can higher someone off the street to do the bookkeeping at a much cheaper rate and the person off the street will be more grateful and be less opinionated than a person with a Bachelors degree. Granted this is in the BIG accounting firms that I am referring to. You might get small local CPA firms to higher you but expect a huge pay cut because most pay hourly rates.
