Is software engineering a good career to get into?

I have always been a computer guy and I think that that would be a good choice for me. Is this a good career? How challenging is it? What kind of education do you need (I think it’s a degree in computer science?). I live in Arkansas and I do wonder how many software engineer jobs there would be here though.
I have a couple of years until I have to worry about any of this but I would just like to know now.

Hi There, I’m a software engineer myself, been in this industry for 5 year plus 4 years of education to get into this field… Well, personally, I want to get out of programming, but that’s just me. What I’d advise is for you to select what you really love doing. No matter how much lame it sounds right now, trust me, that will take you places if you are really dedicated. But that’s just me, its all upto you what you decide. Software related jobs are in plenty and high paying too, thats why I’m still here. :)

    Hope this helps.

It’s definitely still a good career choice. In most large Universities, a computer science degree requires a lot of math, like all engineering programs. Probably 2 1/2 to 3 years of calculus. And some of the programming courses are probably quite intense. But some universities don’t require much math for a computer science degree.. It all depends.

in a couple years the job market will probably have recoverd and s/w eng will have good possibilities.
a degree in c.s is close enough if there is no specific degree in s/w eng available; many good schools do not yet have that exact degree.

you can expect to leave AR; it’s not a hotbed of employment for this field ;)
